Sudan: Fixed-line operations to expand『AFRICA news』22 October 2008
Canartel is to expand its fixed-line operations in Darfur and southern Sudan. The company has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the project. The second fixed-line telecom operator hopes to get a mobile license by the end of this year.
The mobile penetration in Sudan is estimated to reach 30 percent, and the company expects that to grow to at least 60 percent in the next two years. Independent estimates have targeted eight million users in the medium term. Canartel´s existing fixed-line operations are also set to grow.
Although the southern Sudan region is expected to hold a referendum on splitting into a separate country in 2012, the company is looking to invest at least $50 million creating infrastructure and establishing a presence in the Darfur region of western and the southern Sudan.
Canartel, majority-owned by Etisalat of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has 250,000 subscribers and capacity for one million, the firm has entered the Sudanese market in 2006 as the first direct competition to Sudatel Telecom Group, in which the Sudanese government retains a 26 percent stake.
Sudan ended the first half of this year with an estimated 9.2 million mobile subscribers, representing a population penetration level of just over 21%.

A new network and facilities have been established in Sudan by Canar Telecommunications, a landline operator based in the country, with assistance from Etisalat, an operator based in the United Arab Emirates which has a 40% holding in the company.
Canar Telecommunications was given an operator licence in 2004 and its network uses Next Generation Network (NGN) applications which rely on wireless networks, IP and fibre optic cables, to provide DSL high-speed data, telephone and Internet services.
The Canartel network will be managed, maintained and operated by Etisalat and the Sudanese work force will be trained by the Etisalat Academy. Etisalat said it will help Canar Telecommunications provide services for Sudan and confirmed its intention to set up a long-term partnership with the government and industries in Sudan.
